Applocker in Windows 7

User Rating: / 43
PoorBest

AppLocker provides a simple and powerful structure through two rule actions: allow and deny. It also provides a means to identify exceptions to those actions. Allow action on rules limits execution of applications to an allowed list of applications and blocks everything else. Deny action on rules takes the opposite approach and allows the execution of any application except those on a list of denied applications. While many enterprises will likely use a combination of allow and deny actions, the ideal AppLocker deployment uses allow actions on rules with built-in exceptions. Exception rules allow you to exclude files from an allow or deny action on a rule that would normally be included. Using exceptions, you can create a rule to "allow everything in the Windows operating system to run, except the built-in games." Using the allow action on rules with exceptions provides a robust way to build an allowed list of applications without having to create an inordinate number of rules.

Now we will go by path with complete step ……

Step 1: Click start menu and write gpedit.msc as shown below in screen shot it’s a local Group policies which is used to define set of rules.

alt

Step 2 : Go according to the path shown as below in screen shot to start with Applocker

Step 3: After that click on the Executable rules then as shown on in the below screenshot create the defaults rules

Note:-(before creating any rules we need to create the default rules)

alt

Step 4: After creating the default rules again right click and create new rule one Dialog Box will appear as shown below. As at first we are going for locking an application we will go by deny rule.

alt

Step 5: Now we will go by path to lock the application as shown in bellow.

Step 6: Click next and browse the file not to click on folder we will lock the internet Explorer so we need to provide the ie.exe file to lock as shown below by path

alt

Step 7: After completing with that we need to go to services and start the Application Identity service, as shown below

alt

Step 8: After starting the Application Identity go to cmd that is command portent Note Run as an Administrator and type the following command as shown below

alt

Write the following command in the cmd gpupdate /force it will update the policy ...

alt

after updating wait for some time because it takes some time to lock the application ...

alt

Step 9: Finally we have locked the Application as shown above.so moving forward to unlock same application again go to the applocker executable rules where we have created the rules for locking right click and edit select the allow rule and apply it as shown below.

alt

Step 10: After completing that again go to cmd and update the Group policies (see the screen shot of step 8).

After completing this we can run the internet Explorer as shown below

alt

So finally we have completed the locking and unlocking of an Internet Explorer using Applocker by path

Streaming music from Windows 7

User Rating: / 18

Listen to your favorite music without having to carry your laptop from the living room to the kitchen. Share your music library on a wireless network.

While this workshop shows you how to stream music from one laptop to another, digital media such as videos and pictures can be accessed using the same method.

Step 1

First we’ll connect the server laptop to a wireless home network. This laptop has Windows 7 with Media player 12 and it has all the music, videos and media that you want to share. Right-click on the Internet notification area and select ‘Open network and sharing center’. Now, click on ‘Connect to a network’ and from the list of networks, choose the preferred one and connect. Enter the secure network key when prompted.

Step 2

Let’s create a ‘HomeGroup’. From ‘Network and Sharing Center’, click ‘HomeGroup’ and then ‘What is a network location?’. You’ll see a window with three options. Select the first one that says ‘Home Network’. In the following window, select what you want to share and click ‘Next’. Follow the onscreen instructions and Click ‘Finish’.

Step 3

In ‘Network and Sharing Center’, click ‘Change Advanced Sharing Settings’ and make the changes. Then go to ‘Media Streaming Options’ and allow people you want access to your files. Open Windows Media Player, go to ‘Stream’ and click ‘Automatically allow devices to play my media’. The content you chose to share is now on this network.

Step 4

To access this content on a client PC or laptop, first connect the machine to the same wireless network as the server laptop, using the procedure in Step 1. Vista users can right click and directly select ‘Connect to network’. Assuming that both laptops are in the same network, open Windows Media Player and see of you can find the shared server laptop in the left pane.

Step 5

To find shared media on the network and to share media from the client PC, in WMP, right-click on Library and click ‘Media Sharing’. Here, you can allow or deny access to other PCs and find the media you’re looking for. Click ‘Ok’ when you're done. Now, the server PC will appear in WMP and other functionalities will remain same. You’re now ready to play the music which is stored on the server PC.

Use Shift-Button to Turn off Caps-Lock, XP

User Rating: / 13
PoorBest

Are you people still struggling with hitting CAPS-LOCK, when you were really trying to use the Shift-Button ? making the text look all weird???

Back in the even older days when Typewriters ruled the office, you released the Caps-Lock button by pressing down the Shift-Button, thus it was never activated longer than needed.

This registry tweak will allow you to do just that. If you press Caps-Lock by mistake, then the Shift-button will shut it off for you. This should reduce the chances of you typing whole sentences or paragraphs SHOUTING at the reader.

  1. Open the registery Editor(regedit)
  2. Locate the following key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Keyboard Layout
  3. In the Right pane add a new DWORD Value, name it: Attributes
  4. Double-Click the DWORD value you just made and enter: 00010000
  5. Click OK
  6. Exit RegEdit and Reboot your Computer

NOTE!
You might experience that you cannot turn off Caps-Lock with Caps-Lock anymore, only one of the Shift-Buttons.

Solving Windows 7 and Application problems quickly using Problem Steps Recorder (PSR)

User Rating: / 38
PoorBest

The new Windows 7 “Problem Steps Recorder”, how to use it, and how it can save you time. The “PSR” is able to quickly and easily document any problem in Windows 7, step by step, in written form. The best thing about PSR is that even an end user can use it to document issues for you.

I am sure that like me, many of you have spent years of your life listening to end users describe issues with their computer system that they want you to fix. Many times, they cannot even reproduce these issues, they may lead you down the wrong path, or forget important pieces of the problems’ description. All of these things cause further struggle in order to get their problem fixed. More headaches await you when, for example, you are trying to resolve a problem that you, perhaps, have never even seen before.

What if you could see every problem that happens for yourself? And you were provided with the exact steps that were taken to create that problem? Think about how much time that could save. Well, the new Windows 7 “Problem Steps Recorder”, or PSR, as I will call it, can do all that for you.

Let us show you how it works…

What can the Windows 7 Problem Steps Recorder (PSR) do for me?

PSR (Problem Steps Recorder), can be run by a regular user or by an administrator. The following is a list of things that a person can do with it once its installed:

  1. Record a series of actions performed in your computer, step by step
  2. Document those actions, in the order that they were performed using text and screen captures at the moment that the action was performed
  3. This documentation will include where the user clicked on each option on the screen
  4. The documentation WILL NOT include anything that the end user typed for privacy reasons
  5. PSR will allow the user running it to create “Comments” throughout the process. These comments will include the text that the person opts to enter in the comments section AND they will also include the area of the screen that the user selects when creating this note (I’ll demonstrate this in a little bit)
  6. The PSR report will show the version of the operating system and even the URLs of any web pages that the user was accessing during the process

Running the Windows 7 Problem Steps Recorder (PSR)

You will not find the PSR in any Windows 7 start menu. The only way to run the PSR is to run the executable – PSR.exe.

Note:
This shows up as being a control panel item when you search for it, however, so far, I have not been able to start it when navigating through the control panel.

While you would not need to specify the location of the executable to run it, PSR.exe can be found at:

C:\Windows\System32\psr.exe

The easiest way to run the PSR is to go to Start and in the Search box just type psr, then press ENTER, as you see in Figure 1.

Using the Windows 7 Problem Steps Recorder (PSR) to solve a network problem

Let us say that you want to document for some junior network admins how to properly configure the Windows Firewall in Windows 7. You have done this a number of times and now you need to show them how to do it. Sure, you could do screencaptures, paste them into Word, and add some notes. However, PSR can make that process much, much easier. With PSR, all you have to do is to press record, perform your process, stop recording, and you have a document. Let me show you how.

First, run PSR by going to Start and type psr in the search box. Press Enter.

When PSR comes up, press Start Record or use Alt-A.

Now, perform your process. I will perform a number of steps but here is one part of the Windows Firewall process that I will perform. You can see all my steps in the downloadable PSR report.

Do not forget to enter comments during your process to make your documentation even better. When you enter comments, you will be asked to mark an area of the screen that will be added to the PSR report.

When you are done with the process you want to document / record, press Stop Record and you will be prompted for the name to give your report, as you see in Figure 5.

Now you are ready to view your report!

Note that to record administrative tasks, you need to run PSR as an administrator

Notice in the PSR report the many steps that I performed, the screencapture, and the comments along the way. Now, I can print out or email this documentation to the junior network admins to show them how to configure the Windows 7 Firewall!

Of course, I could also use PSR to document a problem in Windows and send that report to Microsoft tech support. Another example would be that I could ask an end-user to use PSR to document a problem they are having in Office 2007.

Document Anything with PSR

I know that it is called the “problem” steps recorder but why do you only have to document problems with it. Why not use it to document any steps you take, to perform some critical task, on your computer. What if you wanted to document how to do a mail merge in Word 2007 or how to create payroll checks in Quickbooks? You could document any series of steps that you or an end user performs on their computer using the PSR.

Conclusion

In this article, I covered the new Windows 7 “Problem Steps Recorder”, how to use it, and how it can save you, as a Windows Admin, so much time. Because the “PSR” is able to quickly and easily document any problem in Windows 7, step by step, in written form, it is a great way to document any series of steps on your computer or an end user’s computer.
