My experience on the NetMon / Wireshark session

Posted by   On March 13th, 2011

After the a successful session on Webmatrix by MumbaiITPro’s one of the topmost speaker Mr.Shabbir Ahmed, he once again hit the road with the most powerful networking tool called Wireshark on 5th March 2011. Wireshark basically is the network protocol analyzer with helps you to capture and interactively browse the traffic running on a computer network.

Starting for the very basics he drove us from bottom to top most level of the network. He started the session with a college topic called unit conversion, he taught us how to convert a binary to decimal , decimal to hexadecimal , hexadecimal to binary and vice versa. This conversion went for around 1hr which remind me about the college days how we use to cheat using calculators and all but found quiet simple now and the most intersting this found was there wasn’t any person who wasn’t busy solving the problems including the volunteers too. Next point was moved on Network layers. OSI layer and TCP/IP layer. Again the complete structure on how and where each and every protocol lie, the reason why does a protocol lie on a specific layer ,each and every points were covered. Moving to next slide he showed us some protocols like ARP,RARP,TCP,IP, ICMP etc.. with every protocol he also described its function with size how does the data flow, how the frame is created, set and used. What is the size of the frame on protocol and so onn..

Some of the question arised during the networking part were:

  1. IS DNS TCP or UDP?
  2. What is TTL and how does it differ between operating systems.

After answering such questions the champ moved from and showed us how does a wireshark looks. Some of points covered were:

  • How to install a wireshark
  • Requirments to install a wireshark
  • Tools need to be installed with wireshark

At the end Wireshark was purposely installed in front of the audience just to make sure each and every point is covered. Using Wireshark he showed how to watch out with packets, what are the values ,sizes ad much more. he showed us regarding ARP and TCP packets and were asked to tryout the same with other protocols.

He also promised us to take up a next session regarding the same soon but for a while he with MumbaiITPro’s volunteers decided to switch the next session on Using Hyper-V using Cloud computing. So stay updated on www.mumbaiitpro.org where you can find the details and updates about the events.

can you post the slides as well?

Most of the events are based on practical / demo based and less ppt slides. This training was completely practical with no slides.

  1. No trackbacks yet.
